Philippines 2006![]() ![]() "Why go to the Philippines?" was what everyone asked. Not exactly known through North America and Europe as a prime vacation destination. But the Philippines appealed to us as Southeast Asia without the tourists! Plus, Filipinos I worked with in East Timor had told me about the unspoilt beaches, world-class diving and a magical place called the "Chocolate Hills". As a chocoholic, how could I resist? As you will see in the photos, Philippines is place of tremendous natural beauty. While it doesn't boast the cultural and culinary tourism of, say, a Thailand, it is well worth a visit! We flew in to Manila via a foggy airport-only stop in Hong Kong, and headed straight to the island of Bohol in the central Philippines, home of the tarsier (the world's smallest primate) and the Chocolate Hills. We stayed at a small resort on an idyllic beach, dove, and saw the sights. We then flew to Puerto Princesa on the island of Palawan, the Philippines' western most island via a mandatory overnight stop in Cebu City, Philippines' second largest urban area. In Palawa we visited the Sabang Underground Cave, the isolated island of Busuanga, and stunning El Nido. Finally, we headed back to Manila for an overnight, with a side trip to the active volacano of Lake Taal. In Manila we enjoyed a day of taking in the sights and an evening at the 5th annual Miss Earth pageant! > See the photos. Back to top |
