Peru 1999![]() ![]() My long-time friend Sarah one day simply invited me to Peru. I said "Why Peru?" and she said "Because I love to say the word Peru." I agreed that it was phonetically pleasing and off we went. Actually, she went ahead with another friend of ours and they toured Ecuador first. They then separated and Sarah came down to Lima to meet me. I flew in alone and arrived at 5 a.m. What a shocker! It was a scary taxi ride with Jimmy Suarez into this big, dim, smoggy isolated 5 a.m. city. Sarah was late and I began to resign to the fact that I would be hanging out in Peru all on my own, but eventually she showed up, having been in a bus crash the night before (which, by the way, is why I never take overnight bus rides). Everything turned out great though. We flew to Iquitos, deep in the jungle in the Amazon Basin. You can only fly to Iquitos as there is no road to get there. Approaching Iquitos looking out the plane window, we thought we were going to land in a giant brocolli patch. That is what the jungle looks like from above. We took a five night trip into the Amazon with our fabulous guide Andreas. We met Michael and Therese from Australia whom we have remained in contact with. We saw amazing things in the Amazon jungle - we swam with crocodiles and piranhas and pink dolphins, we had Anancondas wrapped around our necks and we swang from vines. The second part of my two and half week trip was a jaunt in the mountains around Cuzco, particularly to visit the ancient Incan ruins of Machu Picchu. We also managed to visit an untouristed festival in a tiny town called Puacartambo. > See the photos. Back to top |
