Mexico 2000![]() ![]() Still suffering from backpacker's withdrawal after 6 months at home, I turned a two week vacation to the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico into a full fledged travel experience. With a friend, I flew into Cancun and headed west first thing. Stays in Valladolid, Merida and Campeche were punctuated with awesome visits to the Yucatan's famous cenotes (limestone sink holes resulting from the porous limestone nature of the Yucatan's shield), the gulf coasts' flamingo sanctuary at Celestun, and various awe-inspinring Mayan ruins, including Chichen Itza. Towns had colourful character and spicy food while the countryside was flat and green and riddled with ruin sites in various degrees of preservation. We headed for Tulum on the Carribbean coast for the second part of our trip. White sand, turquoise water and warm evening breezes made this part of the trip, as did scuba diving in a cenote and into the underground river system. We finished up on Isla Mujeres, taking in some snorkelling, pina coladas and a trip to a turtle breeding centre. > See the photos. Back to top |
